Psychoanalytic Criticism : The Cat

Psychoanalytic is personality types that explains a persons personality. For instance, there is Id, superego, and ego. Id is the devil that influences one to get whatever one wants to satisfy oneself. The superego is the angel if you should say. It is one that uses our beliefs to do the right and the wrong. The ego is the ultimate personality catcher. It balances the id and the superego so both will match. Basing on The Cat's personality it is mainly the Id because during the beginning, middle, and a little from the end of the book, the cat comes barging into the Narrator and Sally's house coming in as wanted and starts planning their day and starts doing the responsible thing.

The Cat is an annoying animal or should I say part human in the book because for someone to barge into your house not knowing and just automatically plan your day as it goes on. The Cat mainly wants “fun” in the house. Which is good but, as soon as The Cat enters the house, things change. Everything has to go his way. He should be call, Creepy Cat Entertainer and the Hat. Maybe that name suites him more. To explain the Id type personality The Cat delivers, he enters the Narrator and Sally's house unexpectedly bringing in his “toys” to entertain the loneliness that takes place in the house. After The Cat shows off his “AMAZING TRICKS”, and was asked to leave, he leaves and comes back with more “things” for more entertainment.

The Cat's Id type personality contributes to the main idea as the antagonist. Many of his characteristics which is (Id) showing constant demands of his own way of entertainment, ways to create more problems, and a more easy play for him to play around. The Cat is the problem and the solver of the book. The Cat starts his day as a mysterious thing and leads to a problem and the thing leads to a solution.

So basically, the Cat is the devil and the angel towards the end. Knowing that he has done wrong, it ends up fixing his problem.
